A Simple Thank-You…Just Because

Writing thank-you notes has gone out of style, even when we receive a gift.  But how about one that tells someone how important they are to you, how much they mean to you?  Such notes are seldom written–and they should be. It’s a nice thing to do.  You know that the person understands that who they are really matters to you, and they get the warm glow of feeling appreciated.

“But it takes too long, and I don’t know what to say.”

Forget that excuse.  In just five minutes or less you can write a simple yet caring thank-you note.  Use the template at “The 5-Minute Thank-You Note” and get writing.  It’s good for you and for the person receiving it.

More Antibiotics in Our Kids

Are you concerned about the amount of antibiotics your kids are eating?  Not the prescription kind, which we choose to ingest on our doctor’s advice.  The hidden kind we don’t know we’re eating.

A huge culprit is a kid-favorite, McDonalds. Their beef patties are loaded with antibiotics. This is true, too, of other fast-food restaurants.

Scientists say we’re close to overusing antibiotics, which means that, at a certain point, the prescription kind will no longer be effective.

Read more about this at McAntibiotics.  And while you’re there, sign the petition asking McDonalds to cut down on their antibiotic use in our food.

Grandkids Then and Now, Pt. 3

When I saw this, written by Annie Korzen and published in the AARP Bulletin (May 2016), I alternated between chuckles and nodding in agreement.  Because I like to keep my posts short, I’m dividing this up into a few, spread-out posts.  If you’d lke to see Part 1, go to http://www.jackieodonnell.net/2016/05/11/grandkids-then-and-now-pt-1/ and Part 2 at http://www.jackieodonnell.net/2016/08/10/grandkids-then-and-now-pt-2/

I’m a new grandmother [says Annie Korzen], but am I cut out for it?  Look at how differently I raised my son from how he’s raising his.

Summer vacation  —  Then: One week at the country home of elderly relatives.    Now:  One week at the home of Pliny the Elder–in Pompeii.

Discipline  —  Then:  “I hope your brats are twice as bad!”    Now:  “Schuyler, I’m not disappointed in you personally; I’m disappointed in your action of setting the cat on fire.”

Clothing  —  Then:  Hand-me-downs, like that pink tutu my son still holds against me.  (Hey, the price was right!)    Now:  That Dolce & Gabbana  outfit was just $575?

Entertaining  —  Then:  Kids sat at the kids’ table, where the rule was “No comments from the peanut gallery!”    Now:   Kids join the guests at the dinner table.  The conversation is with and about them.

Teenagers  —  Then: You wisely minimized contact with these known sociopaths.    Now:  Weekly family visits with a therapist to prevent drug addiction, unsafe sex or eating disorders.

[And there you have it.  But who cares abnout the generation gap?  Grandkids are GREAT!]

Here’s a Tip: Leave

What’s with leaving racial slurs on restaurant tabs instead of writing in a tip?  It happened last year in two different restaurants in California.  Recently it happened to a 17-year-old waitress in Harrisonburg, Virginia.  In this case, the young waitress, Sadie Elledge, is American-born with a Mexican/Honduran heritage and no hint of an accent.  The message read, “We only tip citizens.”  Plus, the customer-couple would not make eye contact with Sadie.  Her co-workers were outraged; her boss told the customers not to come back.

But it’s not just racial slurs.  Some receipts have hateful notes commenting on the server’s hair color, sexual orientation, weight, religion, and even genitalia.

Come on, jerks. If you don’t like the looks of your server, ask to be moved to another section. If you aren’t comfortable in a place, leave before ordering.  If your service is bad, consider that it might be the fault of a slow cook or a server having to cover too many tables, which means they’re doing the best they can and deserve a tip. Most of all, think about how you would want your daughter or son treated if they were that server.

A Saintly Idea

MOTHER TERESA, the newest Catholic saint, was blessed with the wisdom to understand life in its most simple elements.   In today’s Thursday Thought quote she describes a philosophy she lived by and that would do us good to remember in this world in which atrocities are done in the name of God (no matter what name He/She is called by):

“There is only one God and He is God to all; therefore it is important that everyone is seen as equal before God. I’ve always said we should help a Hindu become a better Hindu, a Muslim become a better Muslim, a Buddhist become a better Buddhist and a Christian become a better Christian.”

Once Trump Has Deported Those People….

There are two sides to every story.  No, I’m not talking about the non-documented people to be deported, or  even their families.  I’m talking about our everyday lives resulting from those deportations–the selfish side that so greatly affects our own lives.

This short video gives us something to think about:

Dusty, Useless Phone Books

Okay, so you forgot to call the phone-book people to stop delivery of those dust-gathering tomes you haven’t used since you first signed onto the Internet, and there they sit.  Tear out the pages and clean windows and mirrors with them, then recycle.  First, though, opt out NOW, before delivery-season is here.  To stop white and yellow pages from arriving on your doorstep, go to https://www.yellowpagesoptout.com.  It’s quick and easy.  Think of how many trees you’ll save, and how much less clutter you’ll have in your home.

The Difference Between Smart and Wise People

Today’s Thursday Thought quote reminds me to think twice in many situations.
