Shouldn’t We Have Asked the Chickens?

Many groups and organizations have been working hard to be more humane toward chickens by getting them out of cramped, stacked cages and out into the open.  Now we find that free-range chickens tend not to use their freedom to roam.  Instead, they spend their time inside or hovering outside near the door, and when they’re outside they peck at each other.

The reason could be as simple as answering the question, “Where are the trees?”  Apparently our modern chicken is the ancestor of fowl that lived in SE Asia’s jungles, among trees that gave them shade, protection from predators, and places to perch. That environment also gave them ground they could peck at to find food, plus dust that they used to clean themselves.

Oddly enough, it was McDonalds in the UK who figured this out years ago, after announcing that they’d use only free-range eggs. When they planted trees outside hen houses they found an increase in egg production and happier, healthier chickens.  And they “range” (roam) more.  Now the UK calls eggs produced in this way “Freedom Food.”

So, why didn’t someone consult the chickens in the first place?

THAT’S Reyclable?!

Some things around the house you think are not recyclable (R) or compostable (C) really are, e.g., human and animal hair (R, C), dryer lint (C), cotton balls and Q-tips with cardboard handles (C).  Before tossing something that just might be recyclable into the garbage, check it out on  www.earth911.com.

Coffee and Life Lessons

All too often we overhear someone laughing at or making fun of someone else’s misfortune or troubles.  It’s especially disturbing to hear it among teens, who are on the cusp of an adulthood that should be more understanding and compassionate.  Most of us do or say nothing, figuring that it won’t do any good and might cause trouble.

A North Carolina woman encountered this situation one day at Starbucks.  Her reactions–and, more importantly, her actions–are refreshing.  I wish I’d thought of that.

Stressful Day? Watch these Bears

People are getting hooked.  They watch these Alaskan bears at Brooks Falls for awhile, then keep coming back.  This is a live cam from the Katmai National Park in Alaska.  The bears seem never to tire of being bear-ish, which makes them fascinating to watch.  Take a look:
